Elements of Hip Hop: History and Culture of a Modern Movement
In this course we will examine four elements of Hip-Hop—Emcee-ing, Graffiti, Breakdancing, and Dj-ing. We will explore the historical, social, cultural, and political roots of this urban youth movement. Particular attention will be given to issues of race, gender, and class within the context of the evolution of Hip-Hop culture. This course will serve to expand students’ understanding of their own consumption of urban arts, culture, language, and aesthetics. 3 hrs lect.
