Central & East Eurpoean Cinema

International Cinema: Central and East European Cinema Since World War II
In this course we will study the esthetic, ideological, and social concerns of the cinema of Central and Eastern Europe from the late 1940s to the present. We will examine a variety of films representative of the countries in the region, including the work of renowned auteurs (Andrzej Wajda, Istvan Szabo, Milos Forman, Emir Kusturica). We will then analyze the changes in film production after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the expansion of the European Union in the past four years, focusing on issues currently pertinent to the region, e.g. emigration, ethnic tensions, and learning to live without borders.
