In the Ghetto: Venice, the Jews, and Italian History
In this course we will explore the history and culture of Jewish Venice in relation to Venetian and Italian culture and history in the early modern and modern eras. This course incorporates scholarship from multiple disciplines including urban culture and architecture, art history, and Italian and Jewish literature and history. We will study the ways in which Venice and its Jewish community, which had its organizational beginnings in the Ghetto, is a microcosm of Italian and European Jewish history.
