Nature, Culture, and Ethics
In this course we will examine through a survey of values across cultures the thesis that causes of, and solutions to, ecological crises must be grounded in some theory of value. We will explore the influence of religious, cultural, and ethical systems on several specific environmental issues. These issues include indigenous land rights and development, religious and ethical commitments to nonviolence, and religious views of divine agency and their impacts on environmental policies. Drawing on diverse perspectives, we will discover how underlying human values and assumptions grounding environmental behaviors may be key to understanding current environmental problems.
