Legal Concepts and Terminology

This course is designed to give students an idea of the most common legal concepts and legal terminology that arise in the U.S. Legal System from the point of view of a court interpreter. By exploring the steps in Criminal and Civil Procedure, students begin to learn the role and scope of the interpreter in a legal setting and to cull terms that occur often and serve as the foundation to begin their practice of court interpreting. Through interactive activities, discussions, and lectures, students also learn the legal terminology (in both Spanish and English) that arises as a function of these procedures. The course culminates in completing course-long assignments of glossary building and role playing as a means to both build terminology and then use that terminology in a practical context.
