The past few years have proved a critical point in the field of girls’ education globally: Malala Yousefzai won the Nobel Peace Prize and the United Nations declared an International Day of the Girl child. Girls’ education is frequently cited as the single most effective development intervention, while many significant barriers and obstacles still exist for girls’ education around the globe. This course will provide an introduction to the growing field of girls’ education, looking at benefits and barriers, by using readings from practitioner, academic settings and popular media. This course will introduce students to the field of girl’s education in the Global South by examining 1) policy, 2) programming and 3) the perspectives of girls’ themselves. In this course, students will become familiar with various viewpoints framing girls’ education and will leave with an understanding of some of the critical questions and considerations to work in this important area.
