Teaching & Learning Addl Langs

What happens in a classroom with learners form a language learning perspective? What does it mean to be “proficient” in a language? In this fully asynchronous course, you will explore some of the key language acquisition theories that contribute to successful additional language learning and consider what you can do in the classroom to help create environments conducive to learning. Activities include, readings, video viewing, discussion boards, peer collaboration and small research explorations. By the end of the course, you will be able to articulate what theories are central to your learning environment, analyze learner language production and what may be most beneficial for them given their levels and needs, and create lessons consistent with current theories about language learning. You will demonstrate your learning through a case study analysis of a learner accompanied by recommendations for a learning environment that may be helpful for their needs and interests. Those studying toward the online MA TESOL will need to complete this course in addition to the other seven core courses before enrolling in the two practicum courses.
