From Modern - Contemporary Art
From Modern to Contemporary Art x
Modern and contemporary art were mainly European and American. Today, contemporary art has become global and multicultural. The most dynamic art scenes are to be found in China, India, Latin America, and recently in Africa. Within Western societies, sexual, ethnic, cultural minorities have seized contemporary art as a mean of emancipation and of affirming their identities. This has broadened the scope of art and has deeply changed the style, the form and the material of contemporary art. Although the US and Europe still dominate the art market, their dominance is being challenged by these new forms of art.
The aim of this course is to give an historical art overview, beginning with the birth of modern art in 1905 to the present. We will review the main arts movements and we will focus on the present-day art scene, providing a general outlook of the diversity of contemporary art today. We will also place contemporary art in its political, social and economical context.
