Intelligentsia and Pop Culture in Imperial and Soviet Russia
This course examines the depiction of the Russian intelligentsia in pop culture from the 19th century until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Through film, media and literature, students will learn about the role that the intelligentsia played in Russian history, as well as its inflection points, and investigate pop culture as a mechanism for the construction of national collective consciousness vis-à-vis the Russian intelligentsia. Course materials include literary and nonliterary works, films, and TV broadcasts.
