WKSHIslam,Islmism&PolCntrlAsia

This workshop will examine contemporary jihadism in Central Asia and the evolution of US security policy toward the region. We will review select terrorist organizations in the five former Soviet republics of Central Asia - Kazkahstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This will include the history and current activity of select jihadist organizations affiliated with the Uighur, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and recently emerged smaller offshoot organizations operating in the region. The workshop will also examine the geopolitical currents affecting counter/anti-terrorism policies within the US security posture toward Central Asia and China. The workshop's central purpose is to engage students in a cross-jurisdictional examination of the historical, geographic, ethnic, theological, institutional, and political factors that shape an understanding of militant Islam in Central Asia.
