Italian Romantic Literature

The course will focus on the three major figures of Italian Romantic literature: Ugo Foscolo, Alessandro Manzoni, and Giacomo Leopardi. Texts will include the most important works by the three writers: Foscolo’s long poem Dei Sepolcri and the epistolary novel Ultime Lettere di Jacopo Ortis, Manzoni’s historical novel I Promeessi Sposi, and Leopardi’s poems in the collection Canti and his dialogues Operette morali. Although the three authors are not Tuscan, let alone Florentine, they all forged their main works referring to Tuscan and Florentine landscape and history (especially Foscolo) and language (especially Manzoni, to a lesser extent Leopardi).
