Climate change poses multiple risks to national and global interests as well as to natural ecosystems. Agriculture, coastal cities, and freshwater supplies are all at risk. Loss of marine and terrestrial biodiversity may impact human food supplies. Increases in extreme weather threaten food crops and energy infrastructure. Public health impacts include direct effects of increasingly frequent and sustained heat waves as well as migration of tropical diseases into temperate zones. These and other impacts, as well as mitigation and adaptation strategies, are detailed in the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), whose Working Group II report, Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, was released in March of 2014. This workshop will explore the IPCC WG II report using case studies of vulnerable human and natural systems, and will introduce policymakers to web-based tools that can be used to assess future climate risks and to plan adaptation strategies. IEPG 8511, “Environmental Science & Risk Management” is a helpful but not essential prerequisite.
