Islam in South Asia

Islam in South Asia AT
Islam has played a significant role in shaping the culture and politics of the Indian subcontinent, from the seventh century to the present. Muslims are the largest religious minority in India, and Pakistan and Bangladesh were formed as independent states for the Muslim populations of British India. In this course we will consider the socio-cultural, religious and political impact of Islam on South Asia. We will pay particular attention to the influence of Sufism on South Asian literary and religious traditions, Islamic reform movements in colonial India, and the place of Islamic law in the secular Indian state. 3 hrs. lect./disc.
