Today's Issues in Spain and Spanish America
In this course we will survey current issues in Spain and Spanish America. Based mainly on readings from Latin American and Spanish publications, we will examine the recent history of Spanish speaking countries, within the context of cultural, social, political, and economic changes. Specific case studies will include government policies pertaining to sustainable development; the impact of poverty, land distribution, and growing megatropolis; trade agreements (Mercosur, FTAA, NAFTA, EU); the role of Indian movements; immigration; the debates surrounding use, and control of natural resources; regional vs. global integration; and the Region's perception of United States' international policy.
