Quebec Identities
A Plural Country: Québec Identities (Pays pluriel. Les identités québécoises)
This course will focus on today’s identities in Québec. Originally based on French culture, Québec’s historical identity, which was under British rule for a long time, finally asserted itself before intensifying and opening up to globalization. However, Québec’s lifestyle and values are truly unique in North America. Through course lectures, various readings, and the sharing of student research, we will examine the facets of social identities in Québec, i.e. the common usage of the French language, education, the healthcare system, economics, politics, arts, and culture.
Required texts:
Jean-Marc LÉGER, Jacques NANTEL et Pierre DUHAMEL, Code Québec. Les sept différences qui font que nous sommes un peuple unique au monde, Éditions de L’homme, 2021 ; ISBN : 9782761954334
Jean-Martin AUSSANT, Claire BOLDUC, Véronique CÔTÉ, Maitée LABREQUE-SAGANASH, Aurélie LANCTÔT, Karel MAYRAND, Gabriel NADEAU-DUBOIS, Will PROSPER, Alain VADEBON-COEUR, Ne renonçons à rien, Lux éditeur, 2017; ISBN: 9782895962366
