IntroGirl'sEducatnGlobalSouth
Since the UN World Conference on Women in Beijing twenty years ago, significant progress has been made on increasing girls’ access to and achievement in education globally. However, despite the fact that girls’ education is frequently cited as the single most effective development intervention, girls throughout the world still face obstacles that hinder (sometimes severely) their educational opportunities and achievement. This course will introduce students to the field of girl’s education in the Global South by exploring girls’ experiences of schooling in different contexts as well as how “girls’ education” is framed in policy and practice. Materials for this course include academic articles, practitioner documents, film, and video. By participating in this course, students will become familiar with girls’ education from various perspectives and will gain a better understanding of some of the critical questions and considerations to work in this important field.
