Intro to Translation Studies

Introduction to Translation Studies
Combining both theory and praxis, this course is geared towards juniors and seniors contemplating a career in translation. During the first part of the course in the lecture/discussion format, we will analyze key concepts of translation studies such as Katharina Reiss’ and Hans Vermeer’s “skopos theory” and Lawrence Venuti’s “the translator’s invisibility.” We will also explore political and ideological influences on translation, specifically gender. We will workshop during the final two weeks when students will translate non-literary texts into their native languages.
