Visual Culture: Vienna 1900

Bloom and Doom: Visual Expressions and Reform in Vienna 1900
In this course we will examine the visual culture of turn of the century Vienna, then the artistic and political capital of a multi-national empire. With the help of primary and secondary source readings, we will consider how artists, architects, and designers sought to come to terms with their shifting world. Part of our inquiry will involve the planning of an exhibition of original artworks from the holdings of the Sabarsky Foundation in New York City, including works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, at the Middlebury College Museum in the fall semester of 2016. 3 hrs. sem.
