History of the New South
What happened to the South after it lost the Civil War and after the Reconstruction experiment ended? In this course, we will explore the history of this region from 1865 to 1965, as Southerners responded to the long-term challenges of emancipation and political defeat and as they sought to revitalize their economy. Through lectures and discussions of scholarly readings and historical documents we will examine what elements of their society Southerners worked to change as well as those they struggled to preserve. 2hrs. lect., 1 hr. disc.
