Intro to Japanese Literature
This course will serve as a general introduction to Japanese literature in translation with a focus on the "great books" of the last millennium, from pre-modern to contemporary times. During the course we will explore literary genres unique to Japan, universal themes, different attitudes toward writing and language, along with examining the aesthetic and cultural background necessary to understanding the writer's point of view. We will read selections from prose, poetry and drama, discuss teaching strategies and develop a slate of classroom activities to enhance the learner's understanding of Japan's literary masterpieces.
