Francophone Painting and Writing in the 20th and 21st Century
African and Caribbean history of painting in the 20th and 21st centuries could be subdivided into two periods. This course examines both of them.
The first one is that of illustration. Novels of Francophone poets like Cesaire, Senghor and Damas were illustrated by Picasso, Lam, Chagall or Masereel.
The second period is that of local creation. Since the well-known First World Festival of Negro Arts in 1966 where Senghor and Cesaire advocated the relationship between identity and art, we have known the birth of the « School of Dakar » (with Pape Ibra Tall), or « School of Poto-Poto Brazzaville » (with Guy Léon Fylla). They developed along paintings from Haiti (with Wilson Bigaud or Préfète Duffaut) or from Martinique and Guadeloupe.
The approach will be geographic, diachronic and synchronic. As we follow the development of Arts during the two centuries, we will focus on some great figures of painters and their role in the evolution of this art in African and Caribbean areas.
Texts and paintings will be shown in class. The main centerpieces will be Picasso & Cesaire, Corps perdu, Lam & Césaire, « Annonciation » ; Chagall & Senghor, Lettres d’hivernage and the Masters paintings of Haiti, Africa and Caribbean.
