ManagingDevlopmentProgramRisks
Development managers should not be seen as the bearers of benefits to target populations. Instead, they are the creators of new risks – risks that generally fall on those with the fewest resource and the least capacity to absorb the negative consequences. The core objective is to equip participants to manage risk as an integral and essential part of the development process. By the end of the Workshop, participants will understand key concepts and frameworks around the problem of risk in development management. Participants will also practice using tools to be effective risk managers to:
• Identify risk – understand the different kinds, modes, and varieties of risk;
• Assess risk – evaluate and prioritize risks;
• Manage risk – develop practical measures to mitigate and reduce risk
Most of the course will involve case studies and simulations. Small teams will be assigned to advise a particular client organization, such as an international development agency, host government ministries, non-profit or community-based organization. The teams will be asked to develop a risk management strategy for their client, making oral presentations to the client’s executive team, as well as providing succinct, focused written analyses.
