Cultures of Lusophone World

Ideas and Cultures of the Lusophone World
The Lusophone world is not a region, a block of countries sharing borders, but rather transoceanic spaces across five continents that are joined by the fact that Portuguese is spoken therein. In this course, we will study major social, historical, and cultural events that have been molding these spaces. Nation formation, revolutions, colonialism and post-colonialism, modernity, racial formations, and gendering discourses are some of the topics to be covered. We will be focusing both on the particularities of these spaces and on dialogues and shared experiences. Texts, fictional and non-fictional, will be drawn from a variety of sources, such as films, music, and literature. (PGSE0215) 3 hrs. lect.
