Solar Decathlon 2011 – Schematic Design
The Solar Decathlon is a competition sponsored by the United States Department of Energy to design and construct a solar-powered house. Middlebury College has committed to fielding a team for the 2011 competition. The objective of this studio course is to develop an architectural design direction for the SD team to pursue through design, development, and construction for 2011. This course will be organized in five segments: research and evaluation of SD competition houses from years past; develop together the goals and parameters and outline the evaluation criteria for the Middlebury house; prepare several schemes for review; select two concepts to develop further in collaboration with students; and formally present their designs to guest professionals, faculty, staff, and fellow students. This course may be accepted as an elective for the Architectural and the Environment focus in the Environmental Studies major with permission of the focus advisor. Approval required; please contact Andrea Murray prior to registration. (Pass/Fail)
