Portuguese Phonology and Phonetics

Portuguese Phonology and Phonetics is an introductory course on analytical and practical study of contemporary Portuguese pronunciation (phonetics and phonology). the overall objective of thsi course is to bring an understanding of the phonetic features of Brazilian Portuguese sounds and how these sounds operate (phonology) when they form syllables, words, sentences and discourse. In general, phonetics is ideally interested in the properties of speech sounds. Phonology is ideally interested in the way speech sounds can distinguish meanings in words and what changes occur when sounds are spoken in connected speech.

Students in this course will have a chance to study Brazilian Portuguese according to these notions of phonetics and phonology. Although Brazilian Portuguese is the focus of this course, students interested in Peninsular Portuguese and other varieties of Portuguese are welcomed to study other varities along with the study of Brazilian Portuguese.
