The Black Body in Art
The Black Body in Art
Our focus will be on examining the representation of the subaltern subject, often labeled “the other,” within the realm of art. We will closely examine processes of racialization and ongoing efforts toward anti-racism, paying particular attention to how the black body is represented and how stereotypes persist within the colonial imaginary and its contemporary repercussions. Additionally, we will navigate the complex interaction between cultural and aesthetic expressions, exploring how stereotypes have been constructed throughout colonial history. This exploration will encompass both literary and visual narratives, shedding light on the representation of the racialized subject across various thematic dimensions, including gender, sexuality, and race. Through this comprehensive analysis, we aim to deepen our understanding of the intricate dynamics at play in the perpetuation and deconstruction of stereotypes within artistic and cultural contexts.
