Art History and Cultural History of Paris

Each session will take stock of a specific period in the artistic history of the capital of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries by highlighting the main movements in art history, and exploring its most emblematic institutions. These will include artistic institutions (Academies and Salons), cultural institutions (Louvre Museum, National Museum of Modern Art, Musée d'Orsay and artists' museums) and those that led artists to new inspirations (Museum of French Monuments, Cluny Museum, Museum of Glories of France). To complete this panorama, a few sessions will focus on urban change (the rise of private mansions in the 18th century, Gothic revival, haussmannisation) which influenced the way of living and thinking about the city. These sessions will be the occasion for a presentation of artistic creation in Paris providing insight into the capital’s cultural life from 18th to 20th centuries
