Slam Poetry: Artistry and Politics
In this course we will examine the artistry, politics, history, and current state of slam poetry through a selection of criticism and a wide range of spoken word performances on video. Students will write two short essays and work in small groups with the professor to develop and perform two new spoken word poems of their own. Poets include the likes of Neil Hilborn, Taylor Mali, Denise Frohman, Danez Smith, Portia O., Andrea Gibson, Rudy Francisco, Emi Mahmoud, Safia Elhillo, G. Yamazawa, Amir Safi, Rachel Rostad, Hieu Minh Nguyen, Yesika Salgado, Brenna Twohy, Kevin Kantor, Glori B., and Samantha Peterson, among others. Some of the material in this course is explicit, deeply moving, and at times disturbing.
