Populisms in LA 20C - 21C

Populisms in Latin America: 20th-21st
The purpose of this course is to analyze the characteristics of populism in Latin America, one of the phenomena considered as central to understanding the past and present of Latin American societies. It will focus on some of the historical populisms (Lázaro Cárdenas, Juan Domingo Perón, and Getulio Vargas) as well as others more recent (Hugo Chávez, Lula da Silva, and Néstor Kirchner).
While the study of Populism in Latin America is one of the issues that has given rise to numerous interpretations, either as those who associate it as a danger to democracy while others who identify it as democratic movements of social inclusion, we will also present the approaches and perspectives that predominate in the current academic literature.
