Humor in the Iberian Peninsula

What are you laughing at? Humor in the Iberian Peninsula
In this course we will analyze the interplay between different varieties of humor and politics in the Iberian Peninsula in the 20th and 21st centuries. Humor is a flexible tool that can serve contrasting agendas: resistance and contestation of the hegemony, but also consolidation of the hegemony. Through the reading of critical theory about humor (Eagleton, Critchley, Carrol) and the analysis of books (O porco de pé/), weekly magazines (/El Be Negre, El Jueves), and TV shows (Vaya Semanita, Polònia), we will arrive at an original interpretation of the socio-political history of Spain. (Two Spanish courses numbered 0350 or above, or by waiver.) 3 hrs.lect./disc.
