Marked Bodies

Marked Bodies: Gender, Class, and Race in Argentina
THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN BUENOS AIRES

Through the articulation of literary, film, testimonial, and artistic texts, this course aims at approaching problems of gender practices as well as analyzing the disciplining of social bodies and the creation of alterities in key moments of Argentine society and culture, in the understanding that political transformations entail confrontations for the social, cultural, and artistic representation of the body. The central concepts of the course would be those of bodies/languages/representation that shape the experience of class, gender and ethnicity in Argentina´s culture.
We will examine –from a chronological perspective—the colonizing projects, the foundation of the Nation-State, the modernization of bodies and languages, and the punishing devices of the last Military Dictatorship. We will also focus in the outcome of the post-dictatorial years and the formation of new movements of political and feminist resistance.
This course is cross-listed with Literature.
