Arabic Discourse Analysis

Seminar on Arabic Discourse Analysis*

This course aims to develop students’ critical thinking about how discourses are used in contexts and they refelect and shape our world. It addresses the ways in which language varies according to subject area, social setting, communicative purpose, and the social roles and identities of the interlocutor. The course discusses the concept of discourse, the methods of analyzing linguistic discourse and its manifestation in fields such as politics, media, advertising and religion. The course discusses oral and written discourses in poetry, prose and other literary genres, with an overview of the concepts of style, body language, persuasion, and the format of written text, in the light of the transformations of literary thought and the emergence of the ideology in literature.
