GIS Historic Landscape Study

GIS for Historical Landscape Studies
This project and laboratory based course connects the classroom, GIS models, and field methods to study and share stories of post-settlement land-use and landscape change in New England. Drawing on case studies and literature, we will use GIS to explore the complex histories of landscape change. We will study the theoretical foundations of historical geography, as well as landscape analysis using advanced GIS tools (spatial statistics, cost surfaces, viewsheds). Then we move into the field-based component focusing on Addison County, Vermont, learning hands-on surveying techniques used to create GIS data. A web-mapping based project will conclude the course.
