The Religions of Russia

This course is dedicated to the history and variety of Russia’s religions. It will explore the relationship between church and state in Russian history, as well as shed light on cultural, historical, and political aspects of religious processes of the past that influenced the contemporary religious situation. Graduate students will familiarize themselves with historical and cultural idiosyncrasies of the development of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Russia. Special attention will be paid to Russia’s traditional, pagan religions and religious minorities. The course will rely on comparative-historical and anthropological methodologies.
