In this course we will explore the nature of Buddhist ethics in canonical texts as well as contemporary interpretations of Buddhist ethics by both Asian and Western practitioners and students of Buddhism. We will consider how Buddhist ethics offer rationales for moral action and models of ethical personhood in an increasingly fractious and conflicted world. This course will include an introduction to ethical thinking in the Buddhist tradition, ethnographic and narrative considerations of the formation of the moral self, fictional accounts of moral life in the modern world, and possible responses to contemporary moral problems. 3 hr. sem.
