An Introduction to Verbal Interaction Analysis

This course is an introduction to verbal interaction analysis. We will first present « transcription » as a tool to question the specificity of oral speech and to prepare the analysis of interactions. We will then analyze a variety of interactions taking place in french speaking contexts. Interactions such as conversations, interviews, commercial negotiation, school discourses will be analyzed with different theoretical frames (mainly ethnography of communication, discourse analysis and intercultural pragmatics) : we will discuss the notion of « genre/type » of interaction ; we will analyze how discourses frame the interpersonal relationship between speakers (verbal politeness, verbal conflicts, intimacy etc.) ; we will discuss some example of cultural differences in interactional rules.
