Economic Development in Africa

Economic Development in Africa
This course will survey the main issues of economic development in Africa. We will begin with a review of the theory of economic growth and development, and will progress to applying it in the African context. We will attempt to identify the factors that impede or promote economic development and poverty reduction in Africa and will examine the roles of international trade, investment, development assistance, and globalization. Selected countries and cases will be studied in greater depth. Some additional problems we will consider are: mineral dependence and development; the consequences of AIDS; corruption, governance, and stagnation in Africa; and, the role of multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, the IMF and African Development Bank.
