ITAL 6751

New Challenges Faced by Italy

The course aims to examine the new anthropological, social, political and economic consequences of the settlement of immigrants in Italy.
After an introduction to the historical evolution of the migratory phenomenon and the complexity of the new Italian reality, it will focus on migration, integration, new citizenship and their challenges.
Principal topics will include data and statistics on migratory phenomenon - from the beginning to the present, integration into the labor market, the school system, social and cultural integration, the second generation of immigrants and identity processes, the issue of citizenship and political exploitation in an increasingly multicultural and multi-ethnic Italy, racism and the various forms of discrimination.
The course seeks to facilitate critical reflection on these new issues and students will conduct research and develop proposals regarding the various social, cultural and political contexts in Italy.
