Marginal Voices, Maghrebi Cine

Marginal Voices in Maghrebi Francophone Cinema
The course is an introduction to contemporary Francophone cinema in the Maghreb and the European diaspora. After a brief survey of North African postcolonial thought, we will examine the works of canonical directors from Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, as well as more recent developments in the Maghrebi-French diaspora. In particular, our discussions will foreground issues of sexual and gender dissidence with an emphasis on marginal voices, identities, and practices. Students will gain a deeper understanding of Francophone visual media and postcolonial theory through critical and creative assignments including video essays, film reviews, and oral presentations.
