Teaching Language to Migrants
Teaching Language to Migrants : sociolinguistic and pedagogical approach
This course focuses on the mechanisms and practices of language training for the so-called "migrant" public.
On the one hand, we will explore from a sociolinguistic point of view the diversity of situations, practices, and sociolinguistic paths covered by the term "migrants". We will explore language policies linked to migration in France as well as the training systems open to migrant groups (according to their status, their age, etc.). This first part of the course will allow students to put the French situation into perspective alongside other contexts known to them.
The course will also aim to situate the practices of language training of migrants in the field of language pedagogy (distinguishing between FLE and FLS). We will examine how to position objectives, contents, and teaching materials by taking into account the learners’ needs but also their very diverse profiles : children, adolescents, and adults. We will later focus in particular on the challenges of teaching migrant populations with little or no previous schooling and who cannot read or write: How can adults be introduced to the written word?
