Teaching Contemporary French

Teaching contemporary French : applied phonetics and vocabulary
The main purpose of this course will be for students to question the specificities of contemporary spoken French in relation to its teaching. The emphasis will be put on the teaching of the pronunciation of standard / informal French spoken in natural interactions, with a focus on « young people’s » vocabulary. Various written and audiovisual documents will be used : songs, radio broadcasts, tv programmes, social networks’ extracts (online oral and written documents).
This course will be organized in three parts : 1. Description of the articulation of sounds and rhythm of French ; 2. Presentation of the main characteristics of standard spoken French (spoken chain and vocabulary) ; 3. Pedagogical ways of teaching French pronunciation (progression, purposes, types of exercises and activities, instructions).
At the end of the course, students will be able to create and implement relevant exercises and activities to teach the pronunciation of a foreign language through the work carried out on contemporary French sounds and vocabulary.
