Another German Narrative. A History of Homosexuality
Modern concepts of homosexuality are closely linked to Germany. Magnus Hirschfeld and his work, the liberal Weimar Republic, and Christopher Isherwood’s Good-bye Berlin, but also the National Socialists’ persecution mostly of homosexual men (Pink Triangle) come to mind. Yet, this course takes a broader historical approach. We will critically examine pervasive stereotypes and understand historical challenges and consequences of past experiences for sexual minorities in Germany to this day. With a focus on the sharp dialectics of liberal exploration/ emancipation and violent persecution of homosexuality since the late 19th century, the course will help to assess the significance of Germany’s most recent decision to recognize gay marriage (2017). With its tumultuous history, homosexuality in Germany serves as a case study for the precarious nature of minority rights everywhere.
