SPAN 6635M
Art of Mexico
THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN GUADALAJARA
Art of Mexico
The course will present a view of artistic practices in Mexico, from Prehispanic to Modern Art. It emphasizes on concepts, over a chronological background, of the Mesoamerican ancient cultures: Aztecs, Mayas, and the west region of Mexico; the contemporary art produced by José Clemente Orozco, Frida Kahlo, and María Izquierdo. Students will identify artistic ideas and forms with two basic questions: Which ideas inspired them? And what are their material innovations? We will discuss a basic bibliography which will be illustrated by images and a visit to the city’s pictorial collections. As a conclusion, students will write an essay about one of the themes discussed on the course. (1 Unit)
Required text: Course pack for purchase in Mexico.
