Gender & South Asian Diaspora

From the Apu to Bollywood: Gender and the South Asian Diaspora
What is the South Asian Diaspora? How is the diasporic experience represented in popular culture, most notably in film and visual culture? Do men and women understand and apprehend this diasporic identity differently, and how? These are some of the questions we will explore in this course as we come to understand the experiences of one segment of the U.S. population. Through an examination of films, television productions, and other popular culture sites we will explore the specific ways in which South Asian diasporic experiences are represented and the cultural work conducted by such images.
