Localization Practicum

Localization Practicum provides real-world experience in the localization industry.

This course is designed for students who prefer to work on existing student-run projects, such as the student-led magazine, podcast, mentorship program, school outreach, etc., or create and run their own project. You can also design and complete your own localization-related research project. This section can also include those students who are currently participating in an internship in a real-world company, or work for a nonprofit organization such as Women in Localization or GALA. The projects and internships all have a learning component, and students will be expected to share their experiences with each other to foster knowledge sharing.

1. Option A: Portfolio/Career “Toolkit”: Implement work or student-led projects that you’ve done, build a portfolio on a website that you can showcase to your employer, with practical applications! (Video recordings with intros, elevator pitch).

2. Option B: Social media strategy: Work on LinkedIN exposure (create a complete LinkedIn profile and include at least one podcast or article, publish something on the web that reflects your work, give back to the community by presenting at events, etc.)

3. Present at an industry event or for an industry publication or website, including a robust social media strategy. This can be a localization industry or a related industry relevant to your topic.

4. Option C: Experiential learning:

o Pitch Eva’s program strategy completed in Fall 2023 Semester and pitch it to someone in the industry (should not be your original assigned mentor!). Add details and provide the implementation plan (or come up with your own version of where to take it next).

o Design your own mini project to add to your portfolio (something that takes you 4-5 weeks to complete).

5. Option D: Internship and/or Volunteering:

o Internship

o Volunteering for WL, Translators without Borders, Translators for Elders, GALA, etc. (must showcase community building and giving back in their portfolio and/or social media strategy)

Translation specific projects (register for TIAG 8605 Translation Practicum instead),

All of the above options need to be showcased in your portfolios and social media strategies. Please highlight the MIIS TLM Program in your portfolios and social media, thank you!

Students will work in small groups and may in special circumstances work individually depending on the above Options. Note to students - please ensure your proposed Options C and D meet all the necessary pre-requirements and you have secured your professor’s approval.
