Art and the Bible
Art and the Bible ST, WT
This course will explore the biblical tradition as embodied in both the Old and New Testaments and as interpreted by a variety of major artists through painting, sculpture, films, prints, tapestries, and stained glass. By studying the work of art within its biblical and textual setting, we will explore the differences between biblical illustration and artistic interpretation. In addition to textual analysis, we will also consider the biblical work of art from a variety of broader perspectives, including historical, political, social, and autobiographical. 3 hrs. lect., 2 hrs. screening.
