Quebec Identities
Although deeply rooted into French heritage from the 17th century colonization, Québec has since developed its own identity influenced by cohabitation with First Nations People followed by many decades under the English crown. After a period of strong cultural affirmation, globalization has begun to add to and to impact the multiple identities of Québécois society. Within this new era, Québec has succeeded in maintaining its social structure and a set of values unique to this northeast American francophone society. Through classroom lectures, various reading assignments, and research projects, students will discover the many facets of Quebec social life and culture, including the French language, the educational and judicial systems, the economy, politics, as well as the arts.
