Topics in Chinese-Lang Cinema

Seminar: Special Topics in Chinese-Language Cinema
This seminar discusses portrayals of history, cultures, nations, classes, genders, identities, memories, and imaginations produced by contemporary cinemas of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Students will gain insights into Chinese-language films and get familiar with the disciplines of film and cultural studies. Requirements include film viewings, presentations, quizzes, class discussions and a final project. Taught in Chinese. All films are English subtitled.
Instructor: Zhuoyi Wang, Ph.D., Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Hamilton College.
Textbook: Bordwell, David, and Kristin Thompson. Film Art: An Introduction. Boston: McGraw Hill, (8th or a later edition).
Students can also choose to use the book's Chinese version.
