This fast-paced, interactive workshop will review conflict management from the unique perspective of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). This small, independent U.S. government agency has more than sixty-five years experience resolving labor-management conflicts and promoting stable workplace relationships, both domestically and internationally, as the best means for achieving and maintaining equitable economic growth. Workshop students will explore the dynamics and origins of the conflict resolution process, options for addressing disputes, interest identification, bargaining dynamics, and examine and apply different negotiating styles and methodologies, including an 8-step mediation process. Activities and role plays will allow students to practice these techniques and appreciate their value in a wide variety of domestic, international, business, labor, community and other conflict situations.
