American Studies: Place, Concept, Identity
What is ‘America’? How has the idea of ‘America’ – as a place, concept, and identity – changed over time? How are its meanings defined differently by and for diverse groups of people, both within and beyond the United States’ geographic bounds? Students will apply American Studies methods to a range of cultural texts, drawn from literature, visual and material culture, mass and social media, and the practices of everyday life, as we seek answers to these complex questions. In the process, students will explore key concepts and scholarly texts in American Studies, preparing them for higher-level coursework in the field. 3 hrs. lect./disc.
